by TERRY SULLIVAN
Elk Run Vineyards is an easy 11-mile drive off Exit 68 on Interstate 70. The drive to the winery is along scenic roads. Just minutes away from the Baltimore Beltway, Elk Run Vineyards is a wonderful winery location for a day trip.
From January through May the winery is opened Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm. During these months the winery is open on Sundays from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm. From June through December the winery is open from Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm; Fridays from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm; Saturdays from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sundays from 1:00 pm until 6:00 pm.
The vineyards, located on both sides of Liberty Road, were first started in 1980. Varietal grapes include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot and Riesling. The focus in the vineyard is to produce great wine grapes. Plants are hand pruned and leaf pulling is done by hand as well as harvesting. In the winery, wines are handcrafted. The first vintage of Elk Run wine was 1983.
The small comfortable tasting room has a long tasting counter made from wood slats. Wine travelers can taste a selection of wines from a large portfolio of about twenty wines from dry to sweet. Elk Run Vineyards produces white and red wines as well as a sparkling wine, and dessert wines including a port.
